Service Employees International Union Local 721, which represents 7,000 city workers, began the strike at 12:01 a.m. — the first major walkout by Los Angeles city government workers in decades.
More than 11,000 Los Angeles city workers are planning to strike on Tuesday, according to the union that represents many of the city’s public-sector staff.
In May, city workers represented by SEIU 721 voted overwhelmingly, with 98% approval, to authorize an Unfair Labor Practice strike — a first by city workers in more than 40 years.
“#HotLaborSummer lives on,” SEIU Local 721 posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “We’re proud to join writers, actors, and our countless other Union siblings striking for respect in Los Angeles.”
Union leaders say dozens of locations across the city — Los Angeles International Airport, the Port of Los Angeles and City Hall, to name a few — will feel some effects as union members walk off the job over what they say are unfair labor practices by the city.
Select Los Angeles city services, such as trash pickup and access to public swimming pools, will be unavailable on Tuesday as city workers plan to go on a 24-hour strike.
