Local activist group USC Forward led a car caravan through the University Park neighborhood on Feb. 11 to push for the re-allocation of USC Department of Public Safety funds amid increased debate over what the future of student safety should look like.
Bob Schoonover, president of SEIU Local 721 and the SEIU California State Council, said in a statement the legal challenge in California was important to set a national precedent for what big companies could and couldn’t do related to worker rights.
“Santa Ana members spend a lifetime working for and earning their pensions, a deferred benefit. And, just as it can make sense to refinance a home when interest rates are low, it can be fiscally responsible to address other long-term obligations, similarly.”
Prior to the caravan circling LAX where thousands of immigrants work and enter into the country, SEIU 721 labor organizer, Felipe Caceres communicated the urgency of immediate action on behalf of undocumented immigrants.
The agreement announced Tuesday “will achieve significant savings for the City, help protect vital public city services and ultimately eliminate layoffs and furloughs for our city workers this year,” said Bob Schoonover, president of SEIU 721.
Bob Schoonover, president of SEIU Local 721 and the SEIU California State Council, called Proposition 22 “an unconstitutional attack on Californians’ rights that if left unchecked will grant permission to companies like Uber and Lyft to dismantle workers’ rights across the country.”
