“We haven’t slept,” said David Green, president of the Service Employees International Union Local 721. “We wanted something fair for our nurses who have done so much during the pandemic.”
The workers, represented by SEIU 721, forged an 11th hour deal that calls for job protections and less outsourcing of jobs at county hospitals and healthcare facilities while also locking in competitive wages.
Thursday morning, on the steps of LAC + USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, SEIU 721, the union that represents the 7,000 nurses, announced the three-day strike that was scheduled to begin June 1 has been called off.
“Our L.A. County nurses have made incredible sacrifices on the front line, so we drove a hard bargain,” David Green, SEIU 721 president, said in a statement.
Service Employees International Union Local 721, which represents about 55,000 county employees, announced Friday that its members had given the union’s leadership permission to authorize a strike.
One of the fifteen unions in the coalition, SEIU 721, which represents roughly 55,000 county public service employees, is currently voting to authorize a strike.
