Stand up and be proud, SEIU 721!
Our hard work and commitment to raise up working families made the difference in our neighborhoods and across our country! Those of us who participate in the voluntary Committee on Political Education (COPE) give additional resources and time above what card-carrying membership requires, because we know that policy initiatives and government officials determine whether or not we have the resources required to provide the services that our communities need.
Over the last year, we heard a lot from pundits about Election Day doubts, recriminations and misfires. But we didn’t allow ourselves to be distracted by the debate. Instead, we chose to focus on the work we do and the communities we serve.
This focus is what delivered for our members and the communities we serve at the ballot box yesterday. What will deliver a win for us in the December 5 Special Election to elect Wendy Carrillo to the 51st Assembly District. And what will deliver the victories we need in 2018 to rise and resist the attacks on healthcare, the public sector, and our rights!
- SEIU 721 members supported Measure EM as a means for funding city services. And El Monte City Special Municipal Election voters overwhelmingly agreed! 69.69% (1,872) voted YES; 30.31% (814) voted NO.
- SEIU 721 members endorsed Mae Thomas and Barbara Jean Calhoun for election to the Compton Unified School District’s Governing Board. The top four vote getters won seats. Barbara Jean Calhoun fell short, in a crowded field, with 6.21% (993). Mae Thomas won the most votes of any candidate with 13.78% (2,205)!
- SEIU 721 members endorsed Christy Gilbert Holstege and Lisa Middleton for election to the Palm Springs City Council. The top two vote getters won seats. Christy Gilbert Holstege and Lisa Middleton won the most votes with 30.08% (5,810) and 30.90% (5,968) respectively!
- SEIU 721 members supported Measure D as a means for funding city services. And City of Palm Springs voters overwhelmingly agreed! 56.54% (5,811) voted YES; 43.46% (4,466) voted NO.
