On the heels of last Wednesday’s tragedy in San Bernardino, community, labor, and elected leaders from across the country came together on Monday night in San Bernardino to mourn for the victims and call for an end the scourge of gun violence in our communities and in the workplace.
Together with partners from across the country, SEIU International deployed grief counselors and mental health professionals to provide support services at the vigil. Both SEIU 721 and the International have committed to continue providing mental and support services as the workers try to move forward after this traumatic event.
SEIU President Mary Kay Henry flew in from Washington DC to join the candlelight vigil and pay her respects to those who have lost their lives and support the families who have been devastated.
“Today we join you in rededicating ourselves and our Union and linking arms with everyone who has been touched by violence throughout this nation to create a powerful force for change that will end gun violence once and for all,” she said.
Mary Kay Henry and SEIU 721 President Bob Schoonover vowed to work towards short-term and long-term resolutions that prioritize the safety of public employees and the people they serve.
“This act has shaken us to our very core. We not only mourn for the 14 who were killed, we’re also demanding our leaders bring stronger safety protections for all public employees,” said President Bob Schoonover.
In the coming weeks, local and national labor leaders will come together to do everything possible to ensure that no more families have to feel this pain, sadness and loss ever again.
