New Revenue for County Services Begins with Passing Proposition 30

Last Spring SEIU members from across the state, collected 100,000 signatures to help qualify “The Schools and Safety Protection Act of 2012” (also known as Proposition 30) for the November ballot. If passed, Prop. 30 would increase California’s revenue by $9 billion which would offset the state’s budget deficit in addition to providing vital funds for local schools and local public safety funding.
Melvin Orphey_LA County_80x80.jpg“I’ve been urging my co-workers to support the Governor’s revenue plan for months now and I look forward to talking to even more voters this fall and help get it passed” said Melvin Orphey, Jr, Pharmacy Technician, Los Angeles County.
Orphey single handedly collected more than 500 signatures to help get Prop. 30 on the November ballot.
Prop. 30 asks those who earn the most to temporarily pay more on income exceeding $500,000. Families earning below $500,000 will pay no additional income taxes. Prop. 30’s income tax provisions affect roughly 1% of all California tax filers.
  • 1 % more for income between $250,000 and $300,000 for individuals ($500,000 and $600,000 for joint filers).
  • 2% more for income between $300,000 and $500,000 for individuals ($600,000 and $1,000,000 for joint filers).
  • 3% more for income over $500,000 for individuals ($1,000,000 for joint filers).
  • A temporary ¼ of one percent increase in sales taxes (which is lower than we paid in 2011).
