This Labor Day, I’m thankful for the strength of our SEIU 721 family.
Over the past several years, we’ve weathered COVID, spiraling inflation, political division and international unrest. We pushed through grief and loss and channeled our energy into a fight for recognition, respect and economic justice.
There’s a new fire in the labor movement — and SEIU 721 members helped ignite it.
A year ago, we captured national attention with a historic strike in the City of LA and won the biggest raises in city history.
A few months ago, we marched in the streets to face down anti-union politicians in Riverside County and won a landmark contract. Walking a picket line at 4 a.m. at Riverside University Medical Center in the freezing cold is brutal, but the bold power of healthcare workers is beautiful.
Now we face one of the toughest contract fights in the history of our union for 55,000 LA County workers, another in Ventura County soon after, and the most important election in modern times.
However, I’m confident. Public support for unions and union organizing is at a post-war high. Thousands of workers in neglected sectors of the economy are joining our union. Most of all, I know SEIU 721 members can accomplish anything when they mobilize and unleash their passion and union power.
You are the best part of the labor movement, and I am proud to represent you.
In Solidarity,
SEIU 721 President David Green
