SEIU California Endorses Safety for All Initiative

Sisters and Brothers,

This week, SEIU Local 721, alongside SEIU State Council and other SEIU Locals from across the state, announced our full support and endorsement of the Safety for All Initiative on the November 2016 ballot.

As the largest union in California, SEIU is committed to leading the fight to end gun violence, and this initiative presents sweeping gun reforms aimed at keeping our communities, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods safe.

We were horrified and deeply saddened by the senseless and deadly attack that took the lives of our sisters and brothers in the LGBTQ community. The recent tragedy in Orlando left 49 dead and dozens more wounded, making it the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

Unfortunately, we are not strangers to gun violence. Just 6 months ago, 10 SEIU Local 721 members lost their lives in the San Bernardino shooting, and every day, frontline workers across Southern California administer care to those affected by the rampant gun violence in our neighborhoods and workplaces.

It’s time to act.

Together, we will fight for lasting solutions that will put an end to the gun violence epidemic in our communities.

By fighting for commonsense reforms to gun policy in California, we are leading the fight for safe communities where our families can live, work, and play, without fear.

California has been leading for decades through the passage of smart gun laws that save lives. This initiative continues that leadership by keeping guns and ammunition out of the wrong hands:

  • Prohibits the possession of large-capacity military-style magazines.
  • Treats ammunition sales like gun sales.
  • Ensures people prohibited from owning guns do not possess them.
  • Requires reporting lost or stolen guns.
  • Shares data with federal system on prohibited people
