On Jan. 20, SEIU Local 721 members marched alongside elected officials, local residents, community leaders and high school marching bands at the 29th annual Kingdom Day Parade in Los Angeles and the MLK Jr. Freedom March in Oxnard.
In Los Angeles, SEIU 721 Vice President Linda Dent led the procession, which included LA City and County workers and their families, a float decorated with union signs honoring MLK’s legacy and an LA City sanitation truck. The Caucuses of SEIU 721 organized the Local’s participation in the event.
“It was a great day to be out in the streets of South Central LA with my family and my union sisters and brothers. We carried Dr. King’s message of putting working families and our communities first. That’s exactly what LA needs today.”
-Simboa Wright, LA City Wastewater Worker and SEIU 721 Executive Board Member
Tri-Counties
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom March was held on MLK Day. SEIU 721 members, families and community members marched from
Oxnard’s Plaza Park. During the march, hundreds of people sang “We Shall Overcome.” At times, the line was so long that people at the front and back of the parade were singing different verses! Everyone marched united and with one spirit.
