When Ventura County announced that it was closing down the Aviary at Steckel Park in Santa Paula, SEIU 721 joined with the local community to save the beloved recreation area. On July 18, 2012, SEIU Local 721 presented a check for $2,000 to the Friends of the Aviary group, which is working to keep the long-time aviary open.

I think it’s a very worthwhile project for us to donate to and get involved with. It’s
something that is very dear to my heart. I’ve been coming up here since 1970 an
d I’d like to see it put back to its original shape.

The Friends of the Aviary group is planning a fundraising concert and dinner in Santa Paula on August 18, 2012.  The concert will have four bands and plenty of good food for $20. The funds will go towards materials to help repair the aviary.
