SEIU 721 presented $20,000 in scholarships to the children of 20 Riverside County members. The scholarships, given out prior to the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, range from $500 to $2,500 and are a part of the SEIU Training Fund, a joint effort between SEIU 721 and Riverside County.
Many of the recipients will be attending local community colleges and universities while they work toward their educational degrees in medicine, nursing, environmental science, psychology, speech pathology, civil and biological engineering. Winning applicants expressed a desire to follow in their parents footsteps and enter into fields of public service after graduation.

SEIU 721 participates in many charitable organizations and community events, but the Training Fund is by far one of our greatest accomplishments. Our members not only work in Riverside County… we live here and raise our families here too. The fund allows us to invest in our future by assisting the next generation of public service workers to accomplish their educational goals. –
Wendy Thomas, Communications Supervisor and SEIU 721 Inland Regional Vice President
The SEIU Training Fund Trust was established in 2009 to enhance the personal and professional development of SEIU 721 members employed with the County of Riverside and their children. Over the years, the training fund has provided tuition assistance to over 150 members, helping them obtain 40 Master’s degrees, 34 Bachelor’s degrees and five job-related certificates. The fund has also awarded over 58 scholarships to the children of SEIU 721 members. Each year, SEIU committee members work together with county representatives to mutually select the candidates.
