Although workers of South Gate are relieved to find a relatively healthy budget, concerns remain about the city’s financial outlook.
Members of the Municipal Employees Association (MEA) and Professional Mid-Management Association (PMMA) met with the city manager and other South Gate officials to discuss the city’s finances.

The city is not running a deficit, but members are concerned because there is only a small surplus fund.
Members are reviewing revenue-generating options to protect services against more difficult times ahead. The city has generated savings through employee pay cuts of 8.5 percent for two years, layoffs and early retirement incentives.
Members are focused on ensuring services and achieving a fair contract before their contract expires on June 30, 2011.
In the last two years, SEIU members have worked closely with the Police Officers’ Association (POA) and other bargaining units to address financial issues in a united front. Members look forward to continuing relationships with residents and workers in all sectors from civilian to public safety in order to provide and protect public services in South Gate.
