County Task Force to be formed to take action on RN reclass issues

The SEIU 721 RN leader and organizer team participated in the Board of Supervisors meeting, Wednesday, June 5.  They urged the Board to approve a proposed plan to establish a high level LA County RN Labor-Management task force, which would assess the current RN classification system and recommend necessary changes.

In response to Nurses’ actions, L.A. County Chief Administrative Officer Bill Fujioka announced the CEO’s full intent to work “in concert with SEIU” in this Task Force. For Registered Nurses, this is a critical step forward in changing the current classification system to respect all RN experience and specialties.

Luz Diaz, a RN in the LAC USC Burn Unit, presented strong testimony to the Board: “By correcting the flaws in the new RN classification system and honoring our specialties, the County will be better positioned to build on our mutual gains—gains in salaries and benefits—that most nurses experienced in the latest contract negotiations—gains that will enable County not only to recruit and retain nurses but also fulfill its public mission to enrich lives through effective and caring public service.”

Our next steps include securing formal correspondence from Fujioka with committed report back dates to the Board of Supervisors. Get involved! Call SEIU 721 at (213) 368-8660 about our next steps.
